The Mobile Driver Interface

James R. Sayer, Ph.D.

With increasing likelihood that a good portion of future vehicles will be shared, it is possible for one’s mobile device to carry with it one’s personal settings for a vehicle – thereby eliminating the need for a driver to learn and adjust as they transition between every different vehicle.  So while you might “rent” and SUV one day in order to go to IKEA, the very next day might have a single seater to get to the airport.  Nevertheless, items like the seat and mirror positions, radio presets, instrument cluster arrangement, even handling characteristics, could be carried with the driver as a set of preferences that are communicated to the vehicle via a carry-in device – such as a smart phone.
